Spring is the season of emergence and manifestation. This is the magical time of the year when everything in nature is burgeoning with life. Now is the time to do something with your life. You have spent the entire winter conserving your vital life force. Now is the opportunity to utilize the stored Chi in a constructive manner.
Spring is the season of eternal hope. It is a time of re-birth, a transitional time bridging the cold dark winter and the long hot days of summer. During this " in-between " period, the world of the immaterial is transformed into material. Something that was invisible before, suddenly takes on a physical form. All the rooting that took place beneath the surface in the winter is now ready to break out; just like that blade of grass exploding out of the ground. During this unique time, humanity is given a chance to fulfill its potential in order to actualize oneself.
In Chinese cosmology, humanity lies between Heaven and Earth. Human beings dwell in the " in-between " place that transcends the apocalyptic view of the world. We live in a grey area, neither black nor white; embodying both characteristics of Yin ( Earth ) and Yang ( Heaven ) energy. Because we live in a dualistic world, everyday of our lives is a representation of the relationship between the realm of Light and Dark.
According to Eastern philosophy, dwelling successfully between Heaven and Earth requires the integration of Light ( Heavenly Yang Chi ) and Dark ( Earthly Yin Chi ). There are myriad ways to bear out this notion of balance. In a clinical setting, acupuncture and herbs would be used as the means. Chi Gong, literal translation is Energy Work, is another methodology to achieve the same objective. There are many different Chi Gong styles. But they all have the same aim: To create harmony in the physical, emotional, and spiritual body leading to a disease-free life.
In Chinese medicine bio-energetic, it is believed that pure energy can be accessed via three doors, or crowns. The top crown that is located at the apex of the head near the fontanel brings down the Heavenly Yang Chi ( energy of Light ). The bottom crown that is located on the sole of the foot draws up the Earthly Yin Chi ( energy of Dark ). The middle crown that is located just below the navel is the point of integration between the energies of Light and Dark. Essentially, this is the place where humanity resides. The name of the acupuncture point where integration takes place is Ming Men; translated as the Gate of Life. Not only are the Heavenly Yang Chi and the Earthly Yin Chi deposited and stored here. In addition, this is the point where the " mixing " process occurs. It is through the process of alchemy in which human nature is born; a perpetual dance reflecting the intermingling shades of Light and Dark. This is illustrated in the traditional Yin/Yang ( also known as Tai Ji ) symbol; which reflects the dichotomy and interdependence of Yin and Yang energy. In Western philosophy, the closest comparison to the ideology of Yin/Yang symbol is the Hegelian Dialectic which states that progress is predicated on the integration ( synthesis ) of two polarized forces ( thesis & anti-thesis ).
